  Great Software    hits: 423

Very Good Software. It´s so easy to resize mass of images ... But I´ve one hint, which would improve it and I think it is not so complicated to do. Why rename images with "mini-" . Why not make a directory under the actual directory named "resized" or better "resized_640" for images, which were resized to 640px and than use the original-filename ? So I could resize the same images moretimes in several resolutions. Would be very pleasant for web-developer who want to make image-gallerys in several resolutions.

Hi!

Thank you for your hint. Actually, this is already done! You can select the Options tab, and set the desired renaming options. There is one option that puts the images in a subfolder named 'resized'. Your suggestion that there should be a folder named 'resized_640' is very good, I might add this in the future versions.

Thanks!

Have fun,

  Access Violation message    hits: 902

Hi. Great sottware - thanks. But I have an
image that won't resize. OS is
Vista.

Type of file, quoting from properties: "JPEG
Image (.jpg)".
Size 1.15MB;
What happens:
- I select the file/image.
- Select box JPG.
- Select Better Quality.
- Click Resize.
There is a click but no file (image name)
appears, as in "mini-filename".
I try again and get the message: "Access
violation at address 004662AD in
module Reszer.exe.
Write of address 0389000" (this number
changes on each re-try)
(And the meaning of the last sentence is not
clear: write of, off, from? What
does it mean?).

I also tried "JPEG quality" button and got the
same message. I stopped
and clean started computer.

Finally used MS Paint to resize to 613KB.
Then after 3 attempts Mihova
resize worked - down to 35KB

OK, problem solved; but why the access
violation & need to use another
progarm first?

Thanks for any help

Hi,

I'm glad that you've solved the problem.
The access violation message is a system message, so I don't really have a lot of control over it (and also don't always know what it means). In your case it might have been an error in my program or even an error in the photo. These errors are really hard to analyse, they don't happen often and they differ from one computer to another.
Basically you don't need to use any other program before you use Mihov Image Resizer, but in your case it looks like this helped.
I hope this doesn't happen again in the future!

Thank you for your report and best regards,

Miha.

I had the same problem. In my case there where problems with the images. In MS-Explorer you can see the images. But if you try to open this images with Internet-Explorer or Firefox you will see nothing. So I opened every image one time with ms-paint and saved it again. Afterwards the image-resizer worked without problems.
This was a problem with the images not the resizer ...

great software but 1.2 filenaming option request.    hits: 611

Reply      Monitor
hello,

great software, works like a dream. my technically challenged aunt just came over to "change the roll of film" in her camera. To my dismay her card had 1600 pictures in it and now I have to rotate them properly. Well along comes this program to do it in batch and bam! I'm done. its wonderful.

One request though, the rotated files all were named with the orginal name and a prefix, eg
abc.jpg ---> right-abc.jpg

but I'd prefer:
abc.jpg --->abc-right.jpg

or even better a user selectable string:
abc.jpg ---> [prefix]<name>[postfix].jpg

where the user gets to set the fixes.

I thought the 1.2 was supposed to have some more options on this feature, but I can only find:
add prefix
create in subfolder
overwrite.

help --> about shows I'm running version 1.2 on and I'm on a Windows XP pro system.

TIA,

Jon

Hi!

Thanks for the compliments and your comments.

You have seen right: currently there are only three naming options in version 1.2. Where did you hear that it should have a customizable naming system?

Maybe I will add this in the future, but there are quite some good programs out that do this much better. I use Total Commander for this task.

Have fun,

Miha.

I can't seem to find it now, but in one of your descriptions of 'new features' you talked about more options than just "mini-" I remember the prose definitely had the string "mini" in it.

I do have and use quite frequently a batch file renaming program (http://www.1-4a.com/rename/) It just would be nice if your program allowed me to skip this step.

I still find it amazing how Windoze still won't acknowledge batch processing and scheduled (non-user activated) tasks.

Sure, the option is here, it's just more limited than you might have imagined or I might have wished.

Maybe in Windows 7... By the way, Mihov Image Resizer works on Windows 7 beta, tested and passed. It resizes images perfectly and fast.

Hello!

I hope you've managed to recover from all the holidays and that you've had fun doing it! I sure have and as a New Years' present I have released a new version of Mihov Image Resizer, my most popular utility. The program is still free, which is my way of helping you through the times of recession.

The new version 1.2 brings some frequently requested features:
* hidden and system folders are visible with the program now
* selected pixel size is remembered for the next program run (separate for JPG, GIF and BMP)
* selected JPG quality is remembered for the next program run
* remember last used folder and load it next time the program runs
...and others.

You can download the version 1.2 of Mihov Image Resizer from its web site:
http://www.imageresizer.com/

I wish you all the best!

Have fun,

Miha Psenica.

Is there anything that I can do to get this flawless program to show folders with + S Attibutes. I have a few folders with the desktop ini file changed to show a back ground image and change the text color. It seems that this causes the Miha Utilitie to ignore the folder. I am using Win XP Pro. Other than that, a most usefull program. I down loaded 2000 thumbnails from www.netflix.com of my rental history and wanted to put it in a slide show but the thumbs were to small, but this program if I put them in a different folder enlarged them from 5k 110x150 to 400 and it looks suppriseingly well. I am going to try it at 300 too. Anyway thanks again for a wonderful program. Most programs want to shrink, yours shows thinking out of the box and is admirable.

Hi Chuck!

Thank you for your compliments on Mihov Image Resizer! I designed it to be good, so I'm glad you like it.
You have done a good job researching why some folders don't show. And you are right: if you change folder icon in Windows XP or Vista (and possible also Win7 - Windows 7), then the folder becomes system folder and is not visible for Mihov Image Resizer any more.
Anyway, I have fixed this is _some_ version, just not sure which. What version are you using? I will try to instruct you on using the right version if this 'feature' is back to the latest version...

Thank you and good luck,

Miha.

Well, in every case the aspect ration of the picture stays the same. This means that the larger side will be resized to the size you enter. I suggest you enter 1000 and see. Again, the aspect ratio stays the same, so maybe you won't achieve 1000x768.

Yes, aspect stays same, ok.
But that i only can reduce larger side or increase smaller side of pic,
well, that does not solve my problem.
Yes i can manually resize every pic in nearly every available program.
But if i have many pics then neither these programs are useful, nor yours is either.
For example i have pic:
L1000 x H900 to resize to Lxxxx x H768 then yes,
I can manually calculate xxxx = 1000x768/900 = 853 and then resize with ur utility to 853 and
result is L853xH768 as wished, yes.
But this is no advantage, if i dont have many same sized fotos.
As i said, single fotos can be resized more comfortable in other programs to height 768 without calculation.
But what, if one has many different ones?

Hi!

Yes, you are right - in this case you can't use my program. In this case you would need a program that uses the smallest number of the both for the resizing. I'm sorry... I hope you will find the program that will do the job.

Have fun,

Miha.

Hi!

Thanks for your question. Maybe the problem is that you are inputting a bigger pixel size than the original picture? The picture will not be upsized, only downsized.
Another option is that you didn't select the file on the left side when clicking Resize.

I hope tghis helps you to solve the problem.

Right now there is no command line parameter to tell the size of the loaded image.

As the District Manager for the states of Washington, Idaho, Montana and Oregon for the company I work for, I found your Mihov Image Resizer the almost perfect tool to share with my merchandiser reps. They are required to take pictures in their stores of their work and submit them. They are told to take the shot with the camera setting to the best quality and then they have to resize it to VGA. While there is a tool from Microsoft called Image Resizer Power Toy for XP, this doesn't come with Vista! The other thing they are told to do is to make sure they are properly oriented so the Rotate feature makes your utility a two for one shot.

The purpose of this post is to mention the 3rd task we request our reps to perform... renaming photos. If only you had a tab that addressed renaming photos this would be the absolute perfect tool for my reps to use.

I have posted an article about your tool on my website and have made that page public.

Not Enough Storage Space    hits: 2939

Hello, I am using Image Resizer 1.1 on a 2 GHz PC with 1 GB of RAM and 30 GB of free hard drive space, running Widows XP Pro with the current service packs and hot fixes, etc. When I try to resize images I've started getting the error, Not enough storage is available to process this command. I ran the program once and resized 5 JPG images (about 1.8 MB each) to a resolution of 640 pixels and it ran the first four files fine then gave me that error. I then manually selected just the one leftover file and it converted it fine (all to Best quality). I just re-ran the conversion to get the exact error message again and it wouldn't convert any of the same 5 files; I immediately got the error. Selecting just one file and trying to convert it now gives the error. I get the same error when I restart the program. I have gotten this error even sometimes after a fresh reboot, if I recall correctly but I cannot reboot now so I cannot test that for certain. Any thoughts? Thank you for your time and the great program; it's fantastic and works well, even if it does give me this error from time to time.

Hi!

Thanks for your compliments, but I received them bitterly since the program doesn't quite work for you.
I don't really have an idea, why does this happen. I remember of an old bug that was very similar to your. Well, it was not really a bug, it was more a Windows limitation. I have read about this a lot, but it's not documented well. The thing is that Windows locate some memory for graphic operations. (I forgot how it was called, some abbreviation with three letters.) This memory gets somehow full (how full it was was shown always in percent, not bytes...) and then this error happens. I have not discovered what fills this memory or how to purge it... The reason was that the error you are seeing was completely random. The only thing I know is that better system didn't help because it was Windows limitation) and that it happened only to some users (and even them only with very large files).
So I guess I can't really help you... :(

I might suggest trying resizing the same images on some other machine, even if it has lower hardware. It might work...

Best regards (and sorry for such a laaaaate answer),

Miha.

Yes, it does resize to that size also. The only thing similar to your problem was when a user has had scrambled output. We have discovered that his graphic card was doing it wrong - he had 8bit graphic card that couldn't handle larger bit depth.
Maybe you are experiencing the same problem here. Do you know what kind of graphic card you're using?

If you want, you can send me an image that you can not resize to my e-mail and I'll try to resize it - just to see if the image is broken or your graphic card can't handle it.

Good luck,

Re: mini-xxx pictures are black    hits: 1710

Well, it had been noted that some graphic cards had problems. But it was not the problem in the graphic card, but in the direct mode that is used to resize the images. This is the reason that the resizing is so fast compared to other products.

I guess in your case WMware might be the reason, but I'm not sure why. Did you try it on some other machine?

Hmm, I guess your question needs an answer :)
I feel ashamed that I have promised some things and have not delivered them.

Actually the answer is somewhere in between. Because I haven't had time I didn't look close enough into the matter to figure out how to implement it. It's not just the matter of 'turning it on', it has to be programmed.

On the other hand, I have also forgotten how fast the time flows. I guess it's not a coincidence that I have a steady job since 2003... Since then there's less time for my hobbies, which Miha's utilities certainly is. I will try to turn my hobby into a business, but this time I won't promise anything.

I guess you're not so happy with this answer and that you would expect me to program the new feature fast. All I can say is I will try, but I give no promises.

Thank you for using my software for so many years (did you know this year is 10 years since I started Miha's utilities?) and thank you for reminding me that my job isn't everything.

Have fun,

This time I'm really happy! After more then three years I have released a new version of Mihov Image Resizer. I have waited long enough, but I think it was worth.

So, what's new? A small design refresh and lots of other things that have been requested by you, the user, among them:
* option to put the resized images in a subfolder (keep the image name)
* option to overwrite the original image with the resized one
* always ask if overwriting files
* ability to save the resized files under a different name other then mini- like in previous versions
* option to preserve image file date and time
* options tab added
* JPEG quality moved to Options tab
* change JPEG quality only (and preserve image size in pixels)
* convert JPEG images to grey scale
* convert JPG to BMP added
* convert GIF to BMP added
* quick links to special folders (My Pictures, My Documents, Recent Files, Desktop)
* remember if the preview window was open when the program was last used
* view image window now shows image size in window caption
* remember main and preview window position and size for the next run
* .. and others!

You can download the brand new version of Mihov Image Resizer from its web site:
http://www.imageresizer.com/

As always, Mihov Image Resizer is free to use and distribute.

All the best to everyone!

Miha Psenica.

Hey, 0.10 is less than 0.9!!!

But I agree, 1.0 would be a good idea. But unfortunatelly for all the users I am not willing to release a version before I am satisfied with it. You can call me a perfectionist (which in a way I am or at least used to be), but that is how things are.

But believe me, I also would like to see it released!

Dear Miha,
I have Mihov Image Resizer version 0.9 and I like it very much. If you have another version with quality bar feature that you can send as a zip file via email could you please send me too.

No. A t the time you can only resize image and keep aspect ratio. In your case aspect ratio would be changed and that is not supported.

Hello.

For me, it would be very useful to resize images without keeping aspect ratio.
A slideshow on desktop resizes images each time they have different sizes. Modifiying aspect ratio won't affect images very much because there are a few difference's pixel
For example, I have images with 1280*960, 1280*966 and 1280*969 maximum.
If you allow modifiying of the aspect ratio in a next version, it would be great !

Sorry for my poor english.
Thanks a lot.

No, it is not possible to change images without keeping the aspect ratio. The program is used to resize photos, and it was not ment to change the ratio - in photos that would only corrupt them.

Have fun,

Sure...

"My Pictures" is only a virtual folder, so it's not really positioned there where you would expect it (there is no hard drive named 'Desktop' in your machine...). So Windows digs this folder deep... Usually you will find it in a place similar to this link:
c:Documents and Settings<USERNAME>My DocumentsMy Pictures
where <USERNAME> is the user that you use to login to Windows. Just browse t it and locate it.

Apart from that, My Pictures is a normal folder any you can find it on your disk.

Hope this helps,

Miha.

Hey, thanks for the reply....i found the 'my pictures' place, but my images are JPEG and dont pull up in Mihov....but my 'Sample pics' do pull up when I click the tab GIF...so does this mean i need to change my pics to GIF or JPG before I can resize??

thanks

Re: Not sure what Im doing wrong???    hits: 2044

No, this only means that you are using wrong tab... Istead of selecting JPG tab, select the GIF tag if you want to resize gif images. If you choose that tab, you will only see the gif images in the file list. Note that the contents of the file list always depend on the tab selected.

Good luck!

Miha.

Hi!

If it's on a network drive, then you'll have trouble accessing it through Mihov Image Resizer. It doesn't support networks...
But still, there is a solution. If you set a virtual drive for that network folder, for example z:, then (after restarting Resizer) you can access this disk as just any normal disk drive. There is a description how to connect a network drive:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308582

This should do the trick.

Or you can use File -> Recent folders to achieve the same.

My website requires that attached pictures be no more than a certain size, and by the nature of the members of my site (an equine site), they are often fairly computer illiterate. Your resizer is exactly what they want, small, simple, easy to use.

If you are interested, the company I use for hosting is extremely reliable and very cost comparable. www.RadioTower.net. Tell Mike Cermak that Laura sent you to ask about the "webmaster's special."

I like this programm very much, because it allows to treat several images at the same time.

Know, I have a question, please:

I have about 2000 tif-files that contain only black and white pixels (1bit). I would need a program or a script that tells me (automatically) the number of black pixels in each file. I do not want to open each file seperately to analyse the number of black pixels, because it takes too long and is errore-phrone.

Does anybody knows a simpel solution for my problem?

Thanks, mut.

Hi!

Thank you for such great compliments! I love to hear that you like my program. And even better, that you want to translate it, too!

Thereason that you haven't found a link fot the online translation is that I have temporarily removed it. There was so many quality translations that I coundn't include them all in to the program. I have also had some major problems with languages that use non-latin characters. Unfortunatelly Mihov Image Resizer is only my hobby, so I have to work for living as well and that takes me a lot of time. Which means less time for further development.
So a short answer would be that you should stay informed about the programs translations (best by mailing list) and translate the program when it will be possible again.

Thanks for your request!

Best regards,

Miha.

Hi!!

Thank you for your question about UPSIZING images. You were asking, how come that if you resize a small image to a larger one, the quality decreases. Or, if I say it with other words - the resolution increases (larger file in pixels) but the quality of the image stays the same or even decreases (visually).

Well, let me give you some information about image formats. The thing is, that jpg is copressed image format. That means, that when you were saving your image (or your camera was), you were making all the effort to make it smaller in byte size. You have put some much effort in this (again, or the camera or your software did), that you agreed to let out all the not-necessary information out of the image. Only the information that you can still see with your eye at current resolution and file size in pixels should stay in the image. That is how jpg works - it compresses the file in a way that the change to your eye is almost invisible, but the change in file size in bytes is evident.

OK, now you have the JPG that is small and nice. And now you have decided that you want to upsize (resize to a larger size) that same image. Sure, there are programs that can do that, but hey! All the extra information in the image is gone! You compressed the image! And while compressing you have decided to erase all the information that you can not see with your eye. But when you are resizing the image, and if you want the quality to stay the same, you have to have some extra information somewhere that exists in the image, but you didn't see it with your eye. And yes, you are right, that information is gone. If you still resize the image to a larger pixels size, the quality will seem much worse. That is just because there is same amount of information in a larger picture.

I hope I didn't complicate things too much and that you are still following. What I wanted to write really, was that it is normal that the image will get worse when you are trying to resize it to a biger size. There are some programs that quarantee you that they will do just that with your jpg files, but the results are not as good as their marketing is.

So, what to do? Try to find the pictures in their original size instead of trying to resize them from small files. If that is not an option, I'm afraid you'll have to live with either small imager of large images of worse quality.

Miha.

Hi!

Well, this is a problem... The image is composed of pixels, and when it is resized, it is composed of pixels again. But if you resize it to 80%, then some pixels have to be lost! If you resized it to 50%, then it would be much easier - every second pixel would be gone. Because of that several algorythms have been developed so that the create pixels of different color so that our eyes are 'fooled' and we see a pretty normal picture. But of course, there are side effects - and one of them is lower clarity of the image.

My suggestion would be that you try several programs (that probably use different algorythms) and see which one creates best results for you. Why 'for you'? This is a sensitive are and I may have different opinion on what is 'better' than you. that's why you have to try and see what is best. and of course, stick to the program of your choice when you find it!

Hope this helped...

Miha.

If you want to do this, you have to copy or rename the first set of images first. The resized images also have 'mini-' prepended to the original file name, and that is why they get overwritten.
What to do to avoid this:
1. Resize imegs to the first size.
2. Copy the resized images to another folder.
3. Resize images again to the second size.

This way you'll ahve the original files, and two resized size images.

Not with my programs!

If I had to do that, I would either:
1) Make a screen shot of that word document (easy), just press the 'Print Screen' button on your keyboard and then paste the image to a graphics program.

2) install a driver for printing to file; then I would print the wjole page to an image.

3) if you have Acrobat (Acrobat, not Acrobat Reader!), then you can convert the whole document to PDF, and from there somehow to image.

4) if you don't have Acrobat, you can do that with OpenOffice for free.

Hope one of those works for you...

Hi,
I've just tried your resizing utility and I think it's great. How do you do your resizing? Do you use a library or custom code?

I'm (slowly) writing a CMS (content management system) which includes a photo gallery system and I use the ImageMagick library but my resized images don't look as good as yours. Can you give me any advice?

Thanks,
Geoff

I use both: a library and some custom programming.
My advice to you is that you search not for pixel resizing, but try to find resampling. You will find several algorythms, for example bicubic. and from there on there is a whole new world...

I hope you will send me your program when you finish it so I'll see what you did!

Good luck with it!!

Miha.

Hey! A friend sent me your Ir.exe to change the size of some music he emailed to me. I am not strong on computer stuff. When I open Ir., I cannot see all of the first page (Is it the 'Homepage?) And there are no scroll bars visible to scroll over to see the whole page. Plus, I cannot get my files from the C: drive into the Ir. (If I could see all of the first page, there might be a key there.) It should be simple, I know, but I guess I'm just a dummie...

My friend scanned the music pages and emailed them to me as JPG files. You did not mention how I could view the entire homepage with scroll bars on the right and bottom, or how I should proceed to get them from my C: Drive in the Ir.

You should save the files to your hard disk, remember where you saved them and then navigate to that location from within Mihov Image Resizer. That way you will be able to resize them to a smaller size so the scrolling will not be necessary any more.

First thing you have to do is to save the picture in Outlook to your hard drive! Try do right click the picture or just find save attachments or something similar in Outlook and save the file to your hard drive, for example to the root of the c: drive.
Then you will find the saved picture there!

Hmm, there may be a problem with the image you're trying to resize...? have you tried the program with some other images?

The other problem could be that you have somehow the wrong tab selected. make sure that
a) your selected tab is BMP
b9 the images you're trying to resize are really BMP. Some browsers can't tell the right type of image and they give the image the extension bmp, even if it is for example jpg.

If that doesn't work, give me more details and will find the problem!

M.

Unfortunately, I am still having trouble resizing my pictures. I made sure that all the pictures were in bmp format and that I was on the correct tab. Of my 160 pictures, I could get about 6 to work. For the others, when I selected them no picture preview would show and when I tried to resize I would get a running stream error. These same pictures all worked when saved in JPG format. However it is important for me to keep have them in BMP at the end. Any thoughts? Thanks for your time and help

I decided to download a different image converter to see if I could do anything with that. Alas, the same stream read error occured. This leads me to believe that the problem lies within the pictures and not with the program. If you have any insight to what could make this work please let me know, but at least we know the problem is not the program

In that case I am pretty sure that the files you have are corrupted or compressed with some unsupported algorithm. If you can open them with any program then do so and save them again, this might write them in a correct way.

Hi Miha!

I don't want to ask anything, nor make any suggestion. This post is just to say "Thank you Miha!" for your wonderful Image Resizer. I've been using it for years, and it's excellent. The quality of the resized pics is great, without artifacts. This software is a must for those who, like me, enjoy digital photography.

Hi again! This is NOT an ad, as I don't made this software myself, but I found it's the perfect complement for your Image Resizer. It's a Renamer, by J.M. Falcao

It's very useful to numbering those weird names digital cameras put on pics, adding names, getting rid of the "mini-" prefix, etc.

Hope you like it!

Actually, Mihov Image Resizer doesn't support this feature yet... So I guess it never worked. Maybe you've used another program before?

here's what you need to do: hit run on the start menu and enter the following in order

regsvr32 shimgvw.dll

regsvr32 %Systemroot%system32phototoys.dll

viola!

ps. if you've not installed the powertoy in the default installation folder (system32), remember to change the path on the second line accordingly.

I ran into the same problem with PowerToy Image Resizer (WinXPHome, Dell4550 2.5 GHzP4), and also tried what toprak mahsulu said to do, but he apparently left out two critical "".

His instructions: Run
regsvr32 %Systemroot%system32phototoys.dll
What was really needed per http://www.winxptutor.com/imgresizer.htm
regsvr32 %Systemroot%system32phototoys.dll.

What I read in this FAQ list got me headed in the right direction and I appreciate that.

I see the problem here: this editor apparently removes all back slashes!!!! (It leaves forward slashes /, but deletes back slashes that need to be included in this string for this operation).

The item to run needs back slashes where I have inserted underscores:
regsvr32 %Systemroot%_system32_phototoys.dll.

Yes, that is true. when the image in gif is resized the information on the transparency is lost.

Another thing: if an animated gif image is resized, only the first frame will get resized, all other frames will get lost. On rare ocasions, the program will crash when resizing animated gif images is started (this goes for version 0.9).

you can reduce the image size in pixels, this way the image file will have less kilobytes.

No, currently there is no option to reduce the size of the image just by telling the image file size.

I click on the GIF tab, then browse to my image, and the instant I click on the image, the program freezes, I never get a chance to do resize, change format, do anything. The only thing I can think of would be that the gif that you're trying to view is a) animated gif or b) corrupted. In that case the program could hang.

I can not think of other reason. Have you tried jpg tab?

Re: JPEG error #41    hits: 6789

I think this error means something like file not found or no data. If you're trying to open the file with Mihov Image Resizer this may mean that you're trying to open a file that has it's name changed and the name that is displayed in the file list is not valid anymore.
The other option would be that your file name consists of some characters that may be invalid in your OS charset or in the program... Try ranaming the files and see if the error still appears.

Hope this helps!

nice program but it needs one more checkbox!    hits: 4709

The assumption that a user would only want to resize an image using the "biggest" size is incorrect. I had a situation where a bunch of images all had the same height but different widths and I wanted to change their height to something a little smaller. this program does not allow for that!! You need to add a checkbox that asks if the user wants to treat the value entered as the new width OR the new height.

Thanks!

You are right. I have made a special version for a guy that needed that; however, this is not very common. I wanted and still want to keep the program as simple to use to ANY user, that is why I try not to add features that could confuse or even scare away less experienced users.
If you have an idea how to 'hide' this useful features and still have them somewhere handy, please let me know...

Any way I could have a copy of that version? I would put it as a checkbox right next to the size that says "The default is to use the width, check here to use the height." That seems easy enough for someone to understand.

Options: change this slider and the changes will aplly to the pictures that are resized, rotated or converted to jpeg.

JPEG Quality: Use this is you son't want to change the picture, but only change the JPEG quality that the file is saved in. This is good for reducing file size but keeping the image size in pixels and jpeg format.

This means that the disk is probably write protected. Make sure that you are having the pictures on a hard disk and not on a CD or similar write protected media.

Well, it seems that you are resizing a small photo and that the size you input is always bigger then the photo.
First you have to know how big a photo you are resizing is. When you will know its dimensions then it is pretty simple - just resize it to something smaller then it already is.

Good luck!

Sure, all resized images stay unchanged. Just find the original image without the mini- prefix - it will have the original size.

Re: Keeping New Size of Resized Image    hits: 2350

Well, if you already downsized the image, and you want to make the resized image larger, then you can do it by entering the largest size into the program and resize the image.
The problem is that when you make a large image from a small one the quality will be very bad. In no case this two times resized image will have the same quality as the original image.

I hope I answered your question!

Yes, version 0.9 does not support EXIF handling. All the information that is stored in the jpeg gets lost with the transformations.
I was thinking of keeping it, but then it would not be real. If EXIF says that this is the picture, 1024x768 in size, made with my Olympus, how can I store that to the resized image with 640x480 pixels? And how can I say that it's made with Olypus when really it was change in the process?

I'm still thinking about this. Help, if you have any good suggestions!

YUP! I had to stop using your utility because there's absolutely NO way to keep the original information. I have the originals and used the resizer to make smaller reference files. BUT, on the web, it's very useful to have the DATE/TIME the photo was taken. Actually, I'd settle for ONLY that. This was my absolutely FAVORITE resizing program until I realize I needed the date/time. :(

I just want to say thank you for this lovely tool. I had this idea while playing around with it. Wouldn't it be good if you could do a Mihov Image Resizer for mobile phones. So you can have a drop down list of which phone to choose and it can resize your pictures to the exact screen resolution. Also it shows you how its going to look on your mobile screen (preview). Just an idea so tell me what you guys think?

This is the bug in windows resources. Try to free up as much memory as you can (exit some programs, specially those that use a lot of graphic resources). restarting Windows also helps.
Usually this should not happen, because Mihov Image Resizer does not use many resources.
Which version of Windows are you using?

I have the same problem. I reboot my computer, it didn't work. I restart it, and it still didn't work. I still got the "out of system resources" message. I have a Pentium 4 - 2.4ghz, lots of space (240 Gb), and have 512mb ram. Normal quality resizing works just fine. Just only when I switch it to "Better Quality" I get that message right away. Can you help me please? Thanks so much.

'Better quality' uses different algorythms then 'normal quality', that's why it happens only then. But I'm still investigating what can be done...

Sorry to bump this topic once again, but I ended up having the same issue. I am trying to make an SVCD of all of the pictures I took this year, and I planned to include the original images along with the mpegs that are created. However, the image files are way too large in their original state to include on the disc. I downloaded this utility to try resizing them to about 50% of their original pixel size, but am finding that when I try to resize them from 2048 x 1536 to 1024 x 768 in "Better" quality, the program resizes about 10 of them, and then gives me the error message. With 785 images to resize, it would be kind of a pain to have to restart after every 10 images.

It seems to be working just fine when I select "Normal" quality (just as the previous messages said), and the quality of the image seems to be pretty good even when saved under "Normal" quality, but it would be nice to have it working at "Better: quality.

I am using Windows 98 SE. I have 256 megs of RAM. I realize it's not a super-computer by any stretch of the imagination, but everything else seems to work properly on my computer.

Now - If you're ready for the really strange part: It only seems to do this every once in a while. In the first directory I tried to resize, it gave me this error all three times I tried to resize at "Better" quality. However, in the next two directories that I've tried, it hasn't given me the error.

The only thing that has changed between attempts is the fact that I opened up my Windows "System Resource Meter" to see if I could keep an eye on how much of my resources are being used.

  Re: Resizing jpegs    hits: 2185

I just wanted to give you a little update.

I resized all 785 of my images (in 11 different directories). "Better" quality worked for 10 of those 11 directories. I cannot figure out for the life of me what the difference between GLRY10 and all of the other directories is, but for some reason, I always get the "Out of system resources" error every time I try to resize the images in that directory at "Better" quality.

No big deal. I simply used "Better" quality for all of my other directories, and used "Normal" quality for that directory.

I'm sorry that I wasn't able to shed any light on when and why this error is occurring.

I do want to tell you how great your program is, though, and let you know just how much I appreciate it. This is one of the two best batch utilities I've ever used (1-4-a-Renamer being the other one). Thank you very much for offering this utility to everyone, and thank you even more for making it freeware. I am a big supporter of the freeware community, and would just like to encourage you to continue developing your wonderful software.

Hi!!

Thanks for your both reports! I also use Win98 so of course I want my programs work on that system too.
What you have described is really funny. The program working in one directory and not in other - that is too much science fiction even for me... As far as I have known (by now!) this error was connected to the fact that memory gets fed by some things (specially GDI memory and user memory, not RAM) and then the eror arises. But now that you have mentioned folder names the puzzle is scrambled again.
I have also noted that when I use the program and get this message, nothing will make it beter (except for log-off or restart). But you say that it happens after 10 images and then you can continue with another folder... Hmm!

This post are just my thoughts in writing, I am not able to shed any light on this either... But it is more of a riddle now than it was before.

Thanks agan for your research and also for your compliments to me, of course :)

Miha.

Just to clear things up: even with my program you won't be able to make images LARGER and keep th equality. That's just not possible.

You can find Desktop somewhere in c:Documents and SettingsYOURNAMEDesktop
This is not a real folder, it's just a virtual shortcut to a real folder.
It's the same with folders like My Pictures, My Documents, My.*

With the current version (0.9) it is not possible to set JPEG quality setting (which makes files smaller in byte size). However, this was possible in version 0.8 and is planned to be added back in the next version as a separate tab. If you want to see a preview please send me an e-mail and ask me to send it to you.

Or where can I find version 0.8?

Well, the "quality rider", as you call it, has nothing to do with compression levels. These are two different things. The quality means the quality of resizing (the algorythm), and the JPG quality means the compression.

I'm not sure when a new version will be released. I also hope that it will be soon :)

The older versions of all my programs can only be found on the CDs with all my programs, which have to be purchased from my web page. There are no older versions on the internet.

This is an error, that does not occur very often. It depends on your operating system version, hardware and several other things. Usualy it means that the system is low on graphical resources, but it is hard to say where are the limits. Something I have discovered is that the newer Windows have this limit set higher.

At the time there is not much that I can do. Try closing other programs, try restarting the program, ans if it doesn't help, restarting Windows. It may help, or it may not.

I hope this helps!

Just do it by resizing the image to 1000x1500 pixels. DPI has meaning ony when printing (dots per inch - there is no way of measuring inches and dots on a screen, there we have the screen resolution).

When attempting to use the utility I find that not all of my directories appear in the list on the left of the screen. For example, it is my practice to keep most photos, images etc in "My documents" but this does not appear as a folder option under IBM preload or under c drive. Also some screen grabs from a flight sim I use automatically save to a screen grab folder within the game folder under "programs" but the programs folder does not appear in the folder list and I can see no way to navigate to it. Finally I use grab clip save utility which automatically saves other screen grabs to a separate "screengrab" folder on c drive but weirdly that does not appear either although other folders at the same level in the folders hierarchy do appear. Am I missing something or is there a problem?? please help as this utility looks very good for resizing images to post to the internet but with the above probs I don't think i cna use it.......

The problem: This happens because the program does not show hidden or system folders. The problem is that Windows XP has to set the attribute of a folder to 'System' if the user selects a custom folder icon. So every folder that has a custom icon will be unvisible in Mihov Image Resizer.

Workaround: Change folder attributes so they won't be 'system' anymore.

Fix: The new version will show hidden and system folders also, and that means that the custom folders will be also visible.

First of all, you don't 'add' pictures, you find them on your disk. That means that if you have pictures stored on c:My Pictures you have to first select the drive c: from the drop down list on the left. Then you will see bellow it the folder structure of disk c:. By using the scrollbar you find the folder that you have pictures stored in, in this example My Pictures. Double click on the folder name and more bellow you will see the names of the pictures. This is where you can do with the pictures whatever you want, like resizing them, rotating, converting,... From this point on you can use the help file and the documentation that comes with the program if you find out that you're lost again.

Hi I am new to your site. Love what your offering.
I just to to ask you a few questions.
1) when converting jpeg's to annother format does it fix the pixels. Meaning: usually when I download or save a jpeg then covert it to a bmp. or tiff or gif. the pixel quality is horrible because it was scanned in a low resolution.
So...what i need to know is...does your program do smart sizing and does the quality of pic's turn out good?
I currently have picture publisher, picture it,vueprint. how does it compare to these.
Thank you for your input.
Sincerely,
Patti

The best way to find that out is by trying the program! It doesn't bite, so be brave :-)
Just make sure that you're testing it on some not vital pictures or that you make backup first.

But just to tell you: Mihov Image Resizer won't make a bad picture look good! I think you should know that before you start trying it. If a picture is bad in original form, it can get only worse, beleive me.

You have to browse to that folder. Under Windows 95 and 98 that's usually c:My Documents, but under Windows 2000 and XP it's a littl more complicated. It's something like c:Documents and Settings(your username)My Documents, where (your username) is your name with that you login into the system. Because this is so complicated I have created a Shortcut to this folder. But it will be available only in the next version, so I suggest you try to find My Documents folder like described above.

I hope you'll find it!

Question:

I am making images bigger, is it just natural for them to become so pizelish that you can't see the pic at all?

Is there a way that the program sharpens as well?

Re: Help for complete beginners    hits: 2197
Posted by
Reply      Monitor
Yes, this is completely natural. You se, the image is compressed, and in normal people's language this means that it is optimized to take as little space as possible. And that means that all the information, that is not relevant to the actual size and quality of the picture, is removed. And if you want to upsize the picture, this means that you want to display more information from the picture. Since the picture is optimized, the upsizing reflects in a worse quality of the image (because the same amount of information is distributed over a larger size).

There are some programs that try solving this issue, but I'm not sure how efective they are or how they could be effective. In my opinion, only by smoothing edges of the image.

Miha.

Well, you should download the program from my site, that is http://www.mihov.com/sw/en/ir.php or http://www.imageresizer.com
The files there surely don't contain viruses. They are compressed and that might confuse some virus scanners. Maybe you should update your virus definitions or try to scan the file with another virus scanner.

Then maybe you haven't downloaded the file correctly? Try avoiding any download managers you might have running. Try turning off any other programs that are running... If nothing works then just download the .zip file, extract it and run - this way it will surely work.

Well, if the pictures are in jpeg format and you want to resize them, the chose JPG tab. If they are in gif and you want to convert them to jpeg, then choose GIF->JPG and so on.
Mind that it is important that you also navigate to the right folder (where images are stored) with the disk drive selection box and the folder list.

Tip for use in an internet cafe    hits: 5035

One of the best things about digital cameras is being able to send fotos from vacation to colleagues working hard in the office ;-).

I didn't dare install MIR at the local internet cafe as I didn't want to get kicked out for installing software. So the photos that I sent were very big. But now that I've got back I found that I can install MIR on my camera's SD card in advance, plug the card into any computer, and run the program.

Thanks to MIR I can now compress my pictures to normal e-mail size (say 70K) and keep my mother-in-law fed with vacation snap-shots too, without clogging her phone line.

I haven't tried this yet from an internet cafe but I'll let you know when I do.

Important side-effect: Despite all the great new feature-requests that you could add to a new version - one of MIR's best aspects is that it takes up less than 1/2 MByte on my camera's memory card.

Thanks-a-million Miha,
AlanRick

You can download a zip version that does not need an installation from this link:

Just unpack it and run the program Resizer.exe! That's it!

The image you're resizing have to be on a write enabled device. So if you're having a picture on a CD, it won't work... Try it!
The other problem may be in the fact that Windows 'reserve' a certain amount of RAM for graphics. This abount may not be large enough for such a large picture...? Just an idea, I'm not sure.

Good luck,

Dear Miha and Forum,

I'm new to this forum and to the software. I used it once already and seems to be a very nice and useful application. Thank you for making it free.

The question I have is whether there is a table of values one can follow to compare resizing of images with image quality when ordering prints of the pictures. For instance, if I want to order 4x6 prints, or 5x7, what should the minimum image size be to have a good quality print?

You are right, there could be such a table. The problem is that 'good quality' is not really defined. Professionals would define 'good' different thatn an amateur user. For him 'good' would be 'good enough to show it to friends', but for a professional 'good' would be 'good enought to dispaly it in a gallery'. Do you see where the problem is?

But in general 300 dpi should be 'good'. And I am not speaking as a professional :-)

I hope this helped, but I'll try to make a table like you suggested and put it here or on the Mihov DPI2Pixel Calculator page.

Have fun,

Miha.

Hi, sorry about reply time. I hadn't checked forum.

Well i think the most important is that the last directory used before closing the app should appear as the first directory when i next open it. That would save from click, click, scroll, click, scroll, click, click, click, select. (Even if we had changed to using another image folder inbetween time it might just be click, scroll, select. But i think it almost never would be an image in program files directory, so it's very un-useful for it always to start there. See.

Apart from that i'm happy. :-)

3) resizing: Pixels

The Image Resizer is a great tool. Hope you find the time to improve it further by adding this feature!

No, never; and I have never thought of that because I don't really use the same values when I run the program at different times. I was thinking more of adding a list of default values from which the user could choose his favorite. But remembering the last value would be also good...

Thanks for a great review!

Currently you can only resize an image proportionally. So if you input 240 (the largest side of the image) in the pixel field, the image will get resized proportionally. If 200 is proportional to 240 as 500 is to 600, then this will work (in your case it works).

Hi there and thank you for a great utility. I am moreinterested in upsizing rather than downsizing. I have tried with FANTASTIC results but it seems that 5500 pixels is the maximum it will resize to - Is there a way around this?

Well, the quality gets reduced if you upsize the images too much. Why would you want to upsize that much?

Hi,
I have tried converting Bmp photo files to jpeg which are stored on a cdrom. However the files come up, but I get a error message when pressing convert. I take it the pictures have to be on your HDD!. My problem is that the files are 17mb each and there are 36 files. Therefore it will take ages and a bit of space to store them onto the HDD.
cheers:)

Yes, the files have to be on a hard disk. There's a simple reason for this: the resized files get written to the same folder as originals - and when the program tries to write them to CD-ROM it encounters an error, because CD-ROM is read only device.
So the solution is to copy the images to hard disk and process them there.

Thanks very much for the quick response. I thought this would be the case. I suppose I will have just put all the files onto my HDD then. I have a decent spec pc, However it says it will take over 20 hrs to transfer 108 bmp files which are photo's taken in RAW mode (17.5 mb) each LOL

Believe me, it won't take 20 hours for less than 2 GB of data! It may take half an hour or up to one hour, not more... I guess Windows miscalculated things...

I know you are busy, but would it be possible for a new version to have a different destination folder rather than the source. This would enable people to convert files form cdroms etc
Thanks again, For a top program. Keep up the excellent work!!

Miha-
Like most digital camera users, I take pictures in the portrait and landscape positions (rotation of the camera). Some cameras out there automatically rotate the images, but mine is older and doesn't. In the batch mode, I was wondering if your program automatically rotates ONLY the images that need rotating. If not, is anyone aware of a program that can do this? Thanks for your help!

Hi!

All programs from Miha's utilities, including Mihov Image Resizer, are made only for Windows platforms. Without emulators they will NOT work on Mac, Linux, Unix,...
They WILL work on all 32bit Windows, that is Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP/2003.

Hi Miha,
I've really enjoyed using your software (sofar only IR). I saw you added on request the feature to get rid of the prefix "mini", which is great. But I'm a little grieved that the quality factor bar has disappeared. How can I now save the pics on 60% or 70%? Why did you do that?
Is it possible to have a link to an older version of IR?

Error with Downloading version .9    hits: 2524
Posted by
Reply      Monitor
I have been using the Image Resizer version .8 for quite a while. It's been just what I've wanted, since I have no desire to fiddle with pictures and make collages, ect. I just wanted something simple, quick and easy to use, and your resizer is perfect. It's very handy to reduce stored pictures so they don't take up so much hardrive space, and to resize pictures so that they fit nicely into emails. Also, I am part owner of an online equine community, and, as the site's Forums Manager, I often have to resize pictures that people want posted in order to fit our site's specs. I've been so pleased with it, that I suggest this program to anyone that asks me about resizing pictures.

Therefore, I was very disappointed when I tried to download the newest version to update my version, and I kept getting an error message. Everything downloads, but when the Install Wizard begins, this message appears saying there is an error in the .exe file. It gives me the choice to retry, abort, or ignore it. I've tried the retry button several times, I've tried downloading from one of the other servers, but get the same error message. What's up? How do I get this update to download? Do I need to uninstall the version I have, first?

Thanks for any help!

Hi!

I'm really glad to recieve a post from such a happy user. That's why I make my programs publicly available!!

I think there have been no problems with downloading the program. I think there can be two reasons why you have problems:
1. You are using download manager which somehow corrupts the file.
2. The download was not complete from some reason, maybe because of the connection, maybe because my server was down.

How you can get the new version:
1. Delete the exe file that was corrupt.
2. Get the program from http://download.mihov.com/ir.exe
3. Try to install it. If it still doesnt work, send me an e-mail and tell me what operating system you're using. I'll sned you the program over e-mail!
4. If the program still doesn't work, we have a problem :-)
But I think this won't happen because you're the first one who has problems - between more than 30.000 people that have downloaded the new version...

Good luck,

Miha.

Your own site is the best "free" site. Otherwise, I suggest using a professional site to post and sell your images. Some of them have a shopping cart features for your customers to purchase images. ProShots is probably one of the best overall image systems. But it's not something you're going to learn overnight. So, if you're the impatient type and looking for a free ride, you might just want to pay some kid to pop a few of your images on your own homemade website. However, that's exactly what it will look like, too.

I don't know.
Maybe there is no files in the folders?
Maybe the files are not image files or are in the wrong graphic format?
Maybe you don't double click the folder to open it?

There are many possibilities, but none of them should be serious. You should solve this problem with basic Windows knowledge.

Maybe you don't have the pictures in the folder My Pictures but somewhere else? Make sure that you're trying to access the right folder.
Then make sure that you have pictures in jpg, gif or bmp - Mihov Image Resizer currently supports only these graphic formats!

Hope this helps.

Miha,

Current version places "mini-" as prefix to the resized files. This makes renaming them back to their original names a real pain. It would be MUCH better if the resized files would be placed in an output directory without changing their names. This is how Photoshop and Paint Shop Pro do it. PLEASE!

New version: Mihov Image Resizer 0.9    hits: 2246
Posted by
Reply      Monitor
Good news!

I have released a new version of Mihov Image Resizer. The
new version 0.9 is superior to the previous version in many
ways. The most noticable is the increase of speed for 20-50
times in best quality mode. And the quality is increased
also!
Other changes:
- better quality of smooth resizing
- 5 recent folders are remembered
- all registry entries removed when uninstalling
- option to turn images upside down (turn around)
- CTRL-A in the file list selects all files
- new languages added

The program can be downloaded from http://www.imageresizer.com/
If you don't like downloading programs from the internet you can
also order it online on a CD from the web page.

I also want to tell you about translations of the web site. At
the moment you can see translated pages of many programs in six
languages at http://www.mihov.com/sw/

I have to apologize to many translators that have been so good
and have helped me with translating the program. I have been
having a lot of problems with internationalization. The biggest
problem was including the languages that use different character
sets. Since I haven't found a solution for a long time I have
decided to put out a new version without many already translated
languages. I hope you understand my reasons and that you know
that I'll be trying to find a solution.

I wish you a good start of the holiday season!

Have fun,

Miha Psenica.

Firstly let me thank you for putting out such a great product, I have used it a lot both for web design and personal use. I have a question I need to be able to resize various web graphics (found on websites) into 300dpi images of all the same size. How do I do this? (if at all possible) These images will be downloaded from the internet in various formats ie. gif bmp jpg. Now I am fine with resizing them to say 200 pixels but this does not help with the dpi as some don't even get above 96dpi making them unsuitable for printed hard copy.
Thank you for your help & time,
Kind regards

I've searched for the meaning of the term "Pixel" to try to comprehend but as of yet haven't found an explanation of how to Resize using Pixel!!!!!??????

Welcome to the world of computers!

To a computer a picture is presented as a grid of dots where each dot has its own color (to put it simplified). Then an image with 1000 dots (this dots are called pixels) can be presented as a 4" picture OR 8" picture, depending just on how big the dot is. So we can't really talk about resizing 'inches' because in computer sense this doesn't have any meaning. Rather than that we talk about resizing pixels - e.g. we reduce the number of pixels from 1000 to 500: the picture gets smaller by half. But you can still print it out at the same size, just the quality will be much worse.

I hope this explanation helps! If not, try to search Google for some more information.

Miha.

I have created a program that will calculate pixel size for you. You have to input desired DPI resolution and size of the prints in inches, the program will return you the size in pixels.

You can download the program from http://download.mihov.com/DPI2Pixel.exe - an 134 kb download.

Good luck with it!

You can not turn the animation off. The best way to avoid the crashes would be not to select the animations for preview and not trying to resize and/or convert/rotate them. That way the program will not crash.

Good luck,

The other option is that it is 'fighting' for resources with some other software that aou're running. try to disable or exit other programs and see if the problem persists.

I think you haven't closed the program (version 0.4) before installing version 0.7.
I suggest you close the program (or restart Windows if necessary, but I think it isn't) and try to install then. There should be no problem since the files are just replaced.

If the problem persists try to install in another folder, for example 'Mihov Image Resizer 0.7'.

I hope this helps!

Zivjo!

If you have an image that is 1600 pixels wide and 1200 pixels in height than the rotated image should have height of 1600 pixels and width of 1200. That means from 1600x1200 before the resizing to 1200x1600 after resizing. This is normal.

If you are referring to the file size in kilobytes, than the explanation is more complex. JPEG format is a compression format. As such it uses a quality setting for the strenth of compression. If the sile size gets smaller then the quality gets smaller also. If you have a file that was saved with the setting of 95 (very high) and then compress it with the factor 85 (pretty good) than the file size of the second file will be slightly smaller.
And this is what is done by rotating images. The image is rotated and then compressed. You can set the JPEQ quality in Mihov Image Resizer - and I guess that the quality you have chosen (or the default one if you haven't changed anything) was lower than the quality of the original image. This would explain the difference in size and is completely normal.

I hope I answered your question!

Lep vikend,

Miha.

Hi!

It's time! I am readdy to make Image Resizer work in command line mode (if you still need it, that is...). I would really like some hints on how you would like command line parameters to look.
I was thinking something like
Resizer.exe c:folder 640 subfolder
That would resize all the images in c:folder to 640 pixels and would put them into a subfolder.

Would an option of resizing just one image be useful:
Resizer.exe c:folderimage.jpg 1024
?

Please tell me your thoughts if you are still interested in the feature.
All others are also invited to share your thoughts on this!

Have fun,
Miha.

a drag and drop ability in mihov with the output appearing in whichever folder the file/s were dragged from would very nice. if that was done by making it command line with switch preferences for it, or maybe as default, it would lead to convenience.

the universe might then finally be complete and we'd all dissapear. so be careful.

Hi!

First: inches and pixels don't go together! You can make a printed picture 2" wide from 200 or 2000 pixels - it is not really that connected. Take a look at this post:
http://forum.mihov.com/view.php?site=qa&bn=qa_ir&key=1033972273&first=1037733268&last=1007145507

What you need I guess is a program to crop an image and then resize it to a specified number of pixels. Currently, you can not crop pictures with Mihov Image Resizer. I am making a program that will allow you to do that, but the sizes will again be in pixels, not in inches or centimetres.

If all the pictures you have are the same size (or at least the same aspect ratio) then you can use Mihov Image Resizer to resize all the pictures to same size. Just set a number, e.g. 640, and start resizing!

I hope I helped,

Miha.

This might help in changing inches to pixels. But then again, there is a new term: DPI. It means dots per inch and it ias used in printing. Usually it is 300 for ptinting and 75 for web.

This program will calculate pixel from DPI and inch size. You have to input desired DPI resolution and size of the prints in inches, the program will return you the size in pixels.

You can download the program from http://download.mihov.com/DPI2Pixel.exe - it is a small 134 kb download.

Miha.

> I want to risize pictures that will be 4x6 inches when I print them. How do I convert the pixels to inches?

The answer is simple: you don't!

A more complicated answer would be that the size in inches (or centimetres) is dependent on your printer (and printer settings). You can print an image 400x600 pixels to 4"x6" if you print at 100 dpi - or to 2"x3" if you print at 200 dpi! You see what I mean?
So the best solution would be to make sure that the image has the right aspect ratio for 4"x6" (100:150 = = 1:1,5) and then set the print size in your printing program to the right size in inches.

Miha.

for jpg and for web applications, approx multiply by 144 pixels per inch. base that on the larger dimension, say 2x3=> 3*144=432 pixels. The aspect ratio has to be observed though.

Hi!

If you want to enlarge an image you should know that the quality can not increase! The quality will stay the same, but it will look worse because the image is now bigger and your eye expects the same 'optical' quality as seen on thumbnail.

Sure, you can use Java. It has a lot of classes that deal with graphics.

I can not recommend any good book, but I advise you to see your local library or amazon.com - they have a lot!

I hope this helped,

Is it possible to read the EXIF data from an image file and stamp it on the image?
The images from digital cameras have this information.
An example of this use is to have the date the photo was taken show up on the image. This can be usefull both when printing these photos or when putting them up on the web.
Example programs that do this are

1. Sorry about my english, I'm spanish.
2. Congratulations for your software it's just what people need :-D
3. I would suggest you to improve the usability in:

- 1 time language selection or a diferent download for each language (it's not normal that the same person want to use the soft in 2 languages and it's a pity to have to change it each time you use it)

- For me the killer aplication would be:
a. select the file/s to convert
b. write the size and select the output format
c. select the quality (depending on the output format chosed in (b))
d. select the directory where the output will be saved.
e) Save /cancel buton.

There could be another option wich is "rotate images" , that would work like this:
a) select file
b) a preview apears
d) select rotate left or right
e) the preview changes. Choose output name or directory. Save / Cancel rotation.

If you like it, you will have to change the soft so the program "evaluates" the imput format and convert it to the output format if necessary (at the moment is the user who has to know if its images are GIF or JPG or...).

- Catalan language and Gallego are in the list, but I don't see them on the language list (perhaps I've download an old version, if it's the case, sorry about that).

Thanks a lot for this great soft.
I hope, this helps you. If you do this changes, I would love to help you with the graphical design, that is a bit grey at the moment ;-) Just email me if you are interested on that, and I'll send you a link to my websites, so you can see my work (I'm 26, like you ;-). Hola! (I just returned from Madrid and I learned a few words in Spanish!)

Thanks for the suggestions!!! I have to admit that I know the program is not getting better by itself, but I have been very busy with my graduation paper (diploma) lately and I haven't had any time to do the programming also. I hope I'll find some time to do it...
Your suggestions are good and would really make the program better, but also different. It would be almost easier to make another program :-) Which is also an option, I've been thinking about that. I'll see...
The 'cgange language' option *should* change the language forever! Does it not? Maybe you have found a bug? Please tell me more about this - on my machine the setting gets saved each time I change it!!
Thanks for your help with the GUI. What would you suggest? By the way, I don't like fancy-full-of-graphic software... But I agree that the interface should and could be more user friendly.
The case with the languages is exactly as you thought it is: the list is compiled in real time, the languaes are added to the program only with a new version. So that is actually a list of languages for the next version... Weird, I agree :-)

Let's hope for the best!

Have fun,

Miha.

Sorry about language seleccion comment. I've using it during this time and it works fine. I don't kwnow why didn't it worked the fist day (perhaps I did something bad). If you can edit messages, please edit mine, so other people doesn't read that it doesn't work (sorry about that) when it works perfectly :-)

If you think on making another program to resize images just write me: llumdigital@yahoo.com when you know each screen text and functionality and I will do a nice and simple design. You can see some of my works:
Moon screensaver (also in english) http://www.hayqueverlo.com/regalos/salvapantallaslunar.html

A program to lear how to type: http://www.hayqueverlo.com/taca-taca

or a more "comercial" design like http://www.invitrofilms.com

As I need it for my clients, I could do the design for free.

Cheers,
Llum.

Re: Resizing to preset width or height?    hits: 1016

The size in pixels that you enter is the size of the LARGEST of width and height. So if you are resizing pictures in 768x1024 and 1024x768 and you enter 512 in the field, both pictures will be resized for the same factor!
So in a way you are resizing pictures with using both width or height...

I hope things are clearer now!

Thanks Willard,
I am using Image Resizer in conjunction with Gallery Creator. Galler Creator probably contains "image resizer" which it uses to create the thumbnails. The problem is that it calls the thumbnails "mini-XXXXX" as well. Since I used Gallery Creator first and already hand the "mini-" prefixed files in the directory I did not think to look at them. I was only downsizing my files from enormous to big so "mini" was not a word I associated with the resized files.
Thanks to your advice I have got things working. But the thumbnails are called "mini-mini-XXXX"
It would be nice to be able to choose the prefix in both programs.

I'm completely perplexed. I've successfully resized a few batches of images - but now the files I want won't show up in Image Resizer. I've tried renaming the file, copying the contents into a new file, moving it to a new place altogether - but IR just doesn't want to recognise these images. Does anyone have any clues please?

And please note that Mihov Image Resizer saves all images under a new name, for example 'image1.jpg' would be 'mini-image1.jpg' after resizing.

Maybe the problem is that you haven't downloaded the new version like you should and the file is corrupt? Please try do download the file again (turn off your download-manager if you use one!) and re-install the program.
Then try again and it should be OK!

Good luck,

Can you prevent artifacts when shrinking?    hits: 1767

With a 5 Mpixel camera (Olympus C5050) and a 1024x768 screen, you need to shrink to about 33% to fit the picture onto the screen. But this introduces artifacts: interference lines, granularisation, etc. This happens both reducing the display percentage and actually reducing the file using Image Resizer in similar ways. I'm looking for a way to minimise or elimate this.

Hi!

If you are saving a file as JPEG file there is no way to prevent the artifacts. The JPEG picture format uses a compression that is not loss-less. Of course the lost information should not be visible to the eye, but if someone uses a very high compression ratio the artifacts may be seen.
Have in mind that every compression of the file (first one already in the camera) make things only worse.

So my advice would be this:
1. Try to avoid saving file multiple times and try to work on the original image.
2. When you are saving files set the 'JPEG compression' level to 'Good quality'. This way the image file size will be greater but the quality will also be better.

I'm sure you'll like the new version 0.9 even better: it will introduce much better quality but a little slower processing. If you want to see a preview just mail me and ask for it!

That is true. It is because th eversion 0.8 was released before you sent the translation! It will appear in the next version.
And a question from me: Hebrew uses another character set and rules for writing, right? I still don't know how to properly code that so maybe the characters will be displayed all wrong... I hope not!
Can I send you a preview version and you'll tell me what you see?

When i let my pictures printed at a fotocentre i am always missing the top and bottom part. This is because my camera (and a lot of others ) takes pictures at a 4:3 ratio (1600 X 1200) and 15 X 10 cm pictures are at a 3:2 ratio. So i'm looking for a feature which resizes the photo to 1800 X 1200 leaving the rest black, white or fill the space with the filename, date, size description or whatever (or optionally cut it off). An other option would be to crop the picture to 1600 X 1066 where i can choose the position the 1066 pixel crop-window is on the picture. I haven't find any program which can do that very easy, and i think i would fit in the scope of a image resizer :-)) Sizes in this example are just just taken for example of cource

Good thinking! I also came to this idea of cropping the picture, but I still have some things that are not clear to me. As you might guess, I would like the process to be automatic so the user would have less work. But I think it is not possible to do it and get good results.
So my best guess is that I'll make a program that will show you the image and a box (with 3:2 ratio), you'll move the box manually and crop the image.
Another problem is that re-saving jpg files results in lower quality of the picture, which is of course bad if you want to take them to a photocentre. But it's not that bad, so this is not really an issue.

If you'll have any more ideas about how *you* would like the program to be, please let me know!

Thanks,

Miha.

For resizing to from 1600 X 1200 to 1800 X 1200 you can do it on a batch process. Don't actually resize the picture, but only add some space on the picture (200 pixels on the side in this example) and optionally make it possible to put some text in it. You could even use the metadata if the jpg picture. The nicest would be if it is selectable which datafield i want to add (original size, picture time/date, camera model, image name, image size or even some custom texts) . Of cource it would be nice to choose the textcolor, textsize and background color. Fun part is that since you don't have to resize, the picture quality could be untouched. The final resizing for printing (depending on what the final size would be) is done at a photo center but if the aspect ratio is right they i don't lose anything of the picture.

I tried a lot of programms, but i couldn't find one that does this for me. The only option that most programs offer is cropping (but you loose parts of the image) or stretch the image where you loose the right aspect ratio (and make me look really fat :-) ). So this option would be something you don''t find on many other programs and makes it different from others

To crop the picture to a 2:3 ratio you will always loose the top and/or bottom. You can't do this on batch processing, because you have to watch to every picture individually and decide which part you want to loose, top, bottom or somewhere in between. This is no problem is you took the picture and didn't zoomed in enough, but sometimes you have a perfect picture where you don't want to loose anything.

Normally when i take some pictures i never process them thru some other program or make them look better then they are (ok, sometimes i remove the red eyes). Most of the time they are ok, so i can directly send them to a fotocentre.
Ohw, now i'm thinking about it, that would be a nice option as well, red eye reduction. Just let people select the small part (circle) where the eye is, and in that area replace red with black. Of cource to do it nice, it's would be nice if you can zoom in to that area to select it more accurate.

As last option it would be nice if you make the program with a separate language file so you can add several languages (same as the image resizer).

So if you want to make a new program for it i would say:
1a. Implement the extra 200 pixel method
1b. implement batch processing
1c. add optionally some text in that 200 pixel area
1d. make (background) color and textsize choosable.
2. Implement cropping (no batchprocessing because there is no use)
3. Implement red-eye suppression.

Ok, if you want more ideas (which i don't have at the moment :-) ) just let me know.

I have never heard of .max files... If you can save the files to bmp or gif you can transform it with my program. If you can save only to .max then Mihov Image Resizer won't help.

Hi!

I decided for this format of filename because I think it is good to keep track of image conversions. It is good to know that image1.jpg looks 'weird' because it was converted from gif (that supports only 256 colors).
But I am planning to add an option to change the extension like you are suggesting and to overwrite files when resizing/rotating.

Your program dosn't suport the Danish letters (æ - ø - å) That makes the translation look bad.! The translation is OK - but there is an (_) every time en of theese letters is used.!

The substitute for Æ = ae
..and for Ø = oe

That would be better if you cannot make the program use the right letters.!

Jan!!

Thank you for this post and for the note about the translation. I don't know if you know or not, but the feature of users adding their languages is pretty new to the program. I have been notified from several translators that some characters (or all, in case of Chinese language) don't show up correctly. I think the problem is in character coding and character sets of different languages. I'm working on this - I still don't know if it's the translation script or the program itself (or both?) that has to be changed.

To your other question: why isn't the program description translated? Because I thought it would be too much work for the translators. You know, their work is also 'freeware', so I can't ask too much.
But I agree that for your site it would come in very handy! And not just for your site.

I hope you have your answers and that I'll fix the problems soon!!

Miha.

Maybe the file is already in use or it can also be corrupted. Try to open another file and see if this continues.

The other option is that some of the programs that you installed corrupted your Windows installation and some files that Mihov Image Resizer needs could be missing / broken.

Do you get this with every image or just some images? It is possible that you're trying to resize an image that is corrupted.

Jpeg error #52 means that there is something wrong with one of your JPEG-files. Please check if the files are really not corrupted (other format or only partially downloaded).

I hope this helps!

That would be great. Resizing images is good, but cropping to the best part of the larger picture would be even better.
Ideally it would allow both. E.g. to half the size of the picture and then a manual crop.

Hello,

I just downloaded it. I think this is what I'm looking for. I want to do mass resizing of images. The resizing form says pixels by default is = 200 pixels. Does this mean that when it converts, it will be 200 pixels x <a smaller number>?

My main question: Does it maintain proportionality? So really if I am using a 1024x768 picture and I say 640, the smaller number will be 480? The standard proportionality?

Thanks,

I am looking for a program, which is able to do an unpropotional resize. Is this possible with this program?
The problem is, when I like to get pictures not from my own printer, but from an online print service, they need a picture in the 2:3 format, but my digital camera has a 3:4 format. That means, I need a program, where I can give a specifique pixel width and length and the program will cut it away. Is this possible, or does anyone know about such a program?

Hi!

This is not possible with Mihov Image Resizer. You can only resize proportionally so the aspect ratio is preserved.

  Resizer Program    hits: 1336

This program needs just one correction and a simple addition.
1. When picking a new size you need to be able to specify what dimension to resize.
ie: Make the width 400 but let the height float to whatever the aspect ratio dictates. or Resize the height to 480 but let the width float to whatever the aspect ratio dictates.
2. The addidtion is to have the new pic written to the output file using a name based on the old picture. ie: Rezie *.jpg and the new pics are *_a.jpg

This lets me keep the original and use a naming convention.

One other idea, when resizeing jpg's just use one slider for quality, i cant make heads or tails of what 2 sliders do. I guess I'm saying: label things better?
Thanks...

What can I say... You're right! I know it would be a good thing to add and that the state now is confusing to some people. I am doing my best (considering that I don't have soooo much time to spend).

The two scrollbars... One is for JPG quality and the other for resizing quality. This is not the same!
JPG quality is defined from 1 to 100, from the worst to best. The better the quality, the bigger the file size. If you set the quality too low you can ruin the picture (but the file will be very small in size).
Resizing quality depends on algorythms used on the picture. Of course they all make small 'mistakes'. Some can make small squares, other vertical lines, some can be very good but slow. The file size can be similar but the output can be very different. So try normal quality first and if you don't like what you see go for the best quality (and be patient because it is really slow).

I hope that cleared things!

Miha.

Current version places "mini-" as prefix to the resized files. Would be good to have input fields to enter PREFIX and SUFFIX parts for the converted files by the user ...

Yes, I do accept PayPal. Actually, swreg does it for me. Since I am not an American citizen I can not open a PayPal account and that is why I am using swreg services. They have prooved as very reliable and trustworthy so there is no need for not trusting them.

SWREG accepts PayPal, Discover/Novus, Amex, Diners, Master Card, VISA, Solo, Switch, JCB, Connect, Eurocard, most Electron but not all, Delta, UK and US checks, USD wires - I think everyone can find his/hers way of paying here...

I hope you'll find yours also!

Hi Louis,

there's no problem is you're a newbie at this - my programs are made also for people that don't know all the details about the stuff they're doing.

Even I don't know everything... The PDD files, for example. But I know that Mihov Image Resizer takes only bitmaps, jpegs, and gifs as input. That means that PDD files are not supported, sorry.

I hope you'll learn fast and with enthusiasm!

Miha.

I think the problem could be:
1. You are trying to write to a write protected disk.
2. You run out of free disk space on your drive.
3. Maybe a folder with such name exists...

I hope this helps...

Miha.

Maybe it is an idea to have some options like it is possible to delete the original file after the work has done. I just resizes 40 files and after that I also had to rotate about 15 of them. Now I have 95 files. Sometimes this is good, but other times it would be nice to just replace it instead of copying it.

Just an idea......

Yeah, It's a good idea and I plan to add that *sometimes*. Right now I am short on time finishing my studies, so I can't promise anything... But the most important thing is that 'something is cooking inside my head', so whatever gets out, it will be great :-)

Have fun and thanks for the idea,

Can Mihov Image Resizer automatically resize a jpg so it's 55k?

This is for an animal shelter web page hosted by petfinder.org. Petfinder only allows uploads of 55k or smaller but it is a real pain in the as.....um arm to manually resize it and have to play around with quality and pixals in a trial and error method to get near 55k.

Thanks

No, unfortunately not. However, this feature is interesting and maybe I will include it in a future version! But as I am very busy at the time don't count on it (too soon).

Solved: Created images look REALLY weird    hits: 1049

Really rarely it happens that the converted or resized images come out really weird, with some sort of bad color. This usually happens on older computers.
I haven't had a clue what it could be, but one of my great users, Jim Delaplante, found out. The problem is connected with the video card type. For the program to work properly you have to have a minimum sixteen
bit video card!
So old video cards with only 8 bits cause problems.

Just so you'll know!

The same as in previous versions: select multiple files in the file window (hold down CTRL or Shift while cliking on the image names). When multiple files are selected click on the 'Resize' or 'Rotate' or 'Convert' button. This will process all the selected images in that folder.

How can the picture get more clear?

If you are resizing the picture so that it gets bigger it is normal, that the picture will not be better quality than the original. And the picture can not get more clear!
You should know that this is theoretically impossible!!

Try to turn off your download manager (GetRight or similar), they corrupt the file if they don't know how to access the redirected file.

No, it does not. You can only resize images and convert them from one image format to another. In the new version rotating will also be possible.

That is not really true... The process takes a very long time (that's why the warning is displayed!), but it doesn't freeze. On my machine (750 MHz Duron) a high quality transformation on a 1280x960 image takes about 17 seconds. I suggest you give the program some more time - and start with just one picture.
One more thing: you don't really need high quality - normal quality is already good enoung!

Thank you, thank you!!!

Hi, IR is great for this, you can change an entire folder to be 640X480 or whatever (according to the ratio of the original pic).

No offense to Miha, but another good program that can do more specific changes,
including changing the ratio if you want, is IrfanView, at http://www.irfanview.com/

A very good *free* graphics viewer and 'fixer-upper'

Have a good day!

Hi!

The JPG image qaulity is set rather high, that is true. If you save the image with another program at quality of 85%, the size will be smaller. That is why I am planning to add the 'jpeg quality' feature to the resizing part of the program in the next version (or maybe one after the next if I am short on time). Until then you can use some other software or wait for a new version!

A progress meter would be nice but for now, ANY action would be fine. A blinking notice "converting" would work. It would dissapear when the conversion is complete.
